News from Foothill Cyclery

Recently Josh Cohen, the owner of Foothill Cyclery, answered questions posed to him by the New Times (10-29-09 edition) and Josh pointed out that bike trends are increasing, due to the price of oil but he also stated that when people start biking they are being rewarded with two benefits: getting exercise AND saving money.

Hello ETC,

October was a very energetic and rewarding month. Rideshare staff worked with individuals to plan their commute trips and encourage the use of sustainable transportation during Rideshare Month - Commute for Cash Challenge. Every day we gave out prizes and every Friday we awarded team and individual cash prizes. Events/incentives were also held for those who get around by bus, vanpool, carpool, biking or walking. Congratulations to the 522 people who took the challenge and reduced 155,572.6 pounds of emissions! It should be noted that of these 522 participants, 201 were brand new users of sustainable transportation.

Let's maintain these healthy commuting habits as we head into the holidays. After all, the gift of clean air is a nice thing to give.

Sharing the Ride,

The Rideshare Team

The Results Are In!

This October Rideshare hosted the Commute for Cash Challenge during Rideshare Month, where commuters were encouraged to try sustainable transportation such as taking the bus, biking, walking or sharing the ride. The goal of the event was to maintain clean air, reduce the amount of cars on our roads and to help individuals in our county save on their commute costs.

As an incentive, participants in the challenge were eligible to win the money they saved by not driving alone, in cash, as well as win $100 weekly and daily prizes.

There were a total of 522 individuals and 194 teams who took the challenge and an amazing 201 participants who were new to sustainable transportation!  Here are some more of the results:

NEW - Get a 31 Day RTA Bus Pass

Taking the bus just got easier. Now, you don't have to use your bus pass within a specific month, but simply within a certain amount of days. This means that if you buy your pass on November 20th, you have until December 21st to use it instead of only in the month of November.

As a result, Monthly & Regional RTA bus passes need to be exchanged for the new rolling 31 day magnetized passes starting November 1st. Click here for a visual guide on how to use these new passes in the new fareboxes (machines that electronically read the pass when you board the bus). The new passes will be available online at www.rideshare.org and at pass outlets. Car Free Program Launches in SLO!

SLO Car Free is hosting a Launch Party on Thursday, November 19th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Regional Airport Hangar!  This is a great way to see what SLO Car Free is all about and find out how you can benefit. RSVP by November 13 at www.slocarfree.eventbrite.com

Car Free

During challenging economic times, promoting tourism is more difficult than ever before.  San Luis Obispo Car Free shows tourists that they can still enjoy a well deserved get-away to the Central Coast, while saving money and the environment too.  By pledging to travel to or around San Luis Obispo without a car, tourists will receive special incentives from participating hotels, restaurants, transportation services and attractions. By "dumping the pump" tourists can save a buck or two, while helping to preserve clean air in the region.

Local businesses can participate in the program by offering premiums or discounts to car-free travelers.  In exchange those businesses receive free membership and are featured on slocarfree.org.
