| 2009-2011 Senior Information
Guide |
The
latest edition of the Senior Information Guide is now
available! Through a
partnership with the San Luis Obispo Tribune, the guide
offers expertise and resources to help professionals,
family members and older adults acquaint themselves with
the resources available within our community.
The
sponsor of this Guide is the Central Coast Commission
for Senior Citizens - Area Agency on Aging. This
non-profit organization is responsible for allocating
federal and state dollars to local agencies to make
certain that supportive, nutrition and health promotion
services are offered to older adults and caregivers in
San Luis Obispo County.
We would
like to ensure that all seniors have access to this
fantastic resource so please contact Joyce Ellen Lippman
at the Area Agency on Aging (seniors@kcbx.net or call
925-9554. |
| Expanding Transportation
Options in San Luis Obispo |
The City
of San Luis Obispo has recently received a grant to
help seniors and disabled members of the community learn
to better utilize SLO Transit and R.T.A. fixed routes
serving the city.
Seniors
and others needing the training assistance offered by
this program can begin
signing up now. Classes and excursions to
improve understanding and utilization of public transit
will be available starting in early spring.
Additionally,
volunteers are being recruited now to be part of this
new-rider training program. These volunteers will
offer assistance to those members of the community
either new to using public transportation or seeking
guidance about ways to better integrate the use of SLO
Transit into their daily routine to help them maintain a
more active lifestyle. Training classes for those
interested in volunteering will start in
February.
Anyone
interested in further information about this program
should contact Fred Munroe of Ridership Development
Consultants by email at Fred@RidershipDevelopment.com.

times. There are two hearings - Friday, January

Obispo, @ 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday, January 19th at the
Paso Robles Senior Center, 270 Scott Street, Paso

the draft Area Plan available at local libraries, from

| Transit Field
Trips |
Rideshare
has created a schedule of dates when they will be
available in different areas of the County to
provide bus and other transportation information
and also arrange a bus field trip for those who would
like to take the bus for the first time. This
calendar can be viewed here.

| Winter Walking Tips
|
Baby,
it's cold outside! Although San Luis Obsipo County
is blessed with a fairly mild climate, the thermometer
is dropping and it is important to know what steps to
take when exercising outdoors. Some of the
benefits of walking are increased energy, cutting
calories and even boosting the immune system. Here
are some tips about exercising in cooler temperatures:
- Don't
dress too warm - to avoid overheating wear layers,
starting with a thin material, such as polypropylene,
and then go for a fleece type fabric for
insulation and top with a waterproof,
windproof and breathable outer
layer. Don't forget a scarf to keep your
face & neck protected.
- Cover
your cranium - up to 40% of body heat is lost through
the head. A hood or a cap with fleece
lining will offer protection from the elements and
help keep the whole body warm. At the very
least, get some earmuffs to protect your ears from the
cold.
- Protect
skin - sunscreen is essential in the winter because it
is still possible to get sunburned on those crisp
winter days in the sun or under the clouds.
- Mind
the conditions - don't go outside if the temperatures
are below zero
Enjoy
your daily
walk! | |

| Just a
thought.... |
If you
have made the decision to limit or stop driving
altogether, it is essential to find alternative modes of
transportation. Getting out of the house is vital,
not just for practical reasons, but also for
participation in every day activities, such as running
errands, going to the doctor and continuing to attend
social and cultural events. Here are some of the
transportation options available in this
area:
- ride-sharing
with friends and relatives
- public
transit
- dial-a-rides
- senior
shuttles
- taxi
service
- Runabout
service (ADA approved)
- bicycles
or tricycles (there are large tricycles made for
adults)
- walking

need more detailed information please contact Cindy | | |
