Senior Transportation Options is a program that started in August 2006, partly funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) with Rideshare providing the marketing costs.  Initially, the program reviewed existing transit services and identified sites where transit travel training could be initiated; e.g. senior centers throughout the County and other senior agencies where outreach could be conducted.  Senior Focus Groups were also held in North County, San Luis Obispo and South County to gain feedback and input on brochures and flyers as well as explore ideas to encourage seniors to get around without a car.  Click here to check out a list of barriers which were identified by the Focus Groups.

Currently SLO Regional Rideshare is assisting seniors (thru senior centers and other groups) to take bus trips within the County. If you would like to be involved in one of these groups, or have a group who would like to take their first steps in the transit world, please contact Cindy Blake @ 781-4362 for more information.

SLO Regional Rideshare has just completed conducting one of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) courses.  Cal Poly Continuing Education's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) courses are designed for retired and semi-retired adults who share a common interest in lifelong learning. This program is made possible through a generous grant from The Bernard Osher Foundation. Members enjoy a wide range of classes, programs and activities up and down the Central Coast.  The course is entitled "Changing Your World, One Ride at a Time".  The first class took place on Wednesday, August 13th, and two novice field trips were taken within the City of San Luis Obispo on various SLO Transit routes on Wednesday, September 10th & Wednesday, September 17th.  A small group took the intermediate field trip on Wednesday, October 8th, using three transit systems to go to downtown Paso Robles.  On November 12th the final trip was taken from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay, using Route 12A R.T.A. bus and the Morro Bay Dial-A-Ride.  It was a wonderful "Indian Summer" day and the views were incredible.  The group enjoyed seeing The Nina (replica of Christopher Columbus' sailing ship) which was being displayed at Morro Bay, and were amazed at how incredibly brave those sailors were in 1492 to survive a journey on such a small and cramped vessel.  Everyone agreed that our transit trips had been much more enjoyable!
