This St. Patrick's Day...Don't Just Wear Green, Be Green

Rideshare is putting a twist on St. Patrick's Day tradition. Most of us strive to wear a hint of green to avoid pinches from those hard-core holiday believers, but given the state of our economy and environment, why not be green too? By leaving your car behind on March 17th, you can help preserve our clean air, keep your cash, feel healthier and build stronger communities, and essentially be green! Rideshare is giving away stickers to individuals who are green and want to wear it with pride. Wear yours and let people know you are doing them and yourself a favor. Did we mention that you'll also avoid being pinched?

Log your miles
Log into TripLink at Rideshare.org to log the miles that you reduced by leaving your car behind on St. Patrick's Day. The miles you record help Rideshare determine how "green" we are as a county. Last year, county residents who recorded miles in TripLink reduced 1.5 million miles! Help us track our county's reduction by entering your miles into your personal commute calendar in TripLink today!

Easy ways to be Green
Being green is easy, especially when you leave your car at home. Try some of the following ways to save cash, get fit and save the planet on St. Parick's Day.

Walk

Walking is free and easy to integrate into your daily commute. If you drive everyday to work, park a couple blocks away from your office and walk the distance. You'll save gas, reduce your dependence on foreign oil, save cash and feel healthier. Not driving those few blocks will also help preserve the clean air we breathe. Talk small steps; start with just two blocks and work your way to 10 blocks. More info.

Bike
Did you know that by riding your bike just two days per week, you could save up to $7,500 a year? Bicycle commuting is fun, fast, provides FREE parking and creates a healthier lifestyle. Sometimes the hardest part is getting started. Check out our
bike webpage for resources on how to get going, including bike maps, putting your bike on the bus, bike lockers, cycling safety, bike buddies and the San Luis Obispo Bike Coalition.

Carpool
Carpooling is easy, flexible and one of the fastest ways to get to work. Also, by carpooling you can save up to 50%-75% on your monthly gas bill. All you need to start a carpool is ONE other person. Often people want to carpool, but haven't been asked. Start by asking someone at your work, then ask your neighbors. Still having a hard time finding a carpool partner? Try Rideshare's online carpool matching system to find people in your neighborhood looking for carpool buddies. For more info on carpooling, check out our carpool webpage. Also, check out our school pool and casual carpool options.

Vanpool
Joining a vanpool can drastically cut your commute costs. Vanpools are recommended for commutes that are longer than 15 miles. For information on how to join a vanpool,
check out our vanpool webpage.

Bus
If you are traveling long distances, taking the bus is the most affordable way to travel. Most busses in the county run every hour and with over five operators in the county, there is likely an option for you. If the bus does not drop off at your exact destination, try putting your bike on the bus to shorten the distance. Check out our
bus webpage for easy tips and tricks on taking the bus, including our online bus trip planner.
