The Bike Month tradition continues. This local and national celebration
of bicycling encourages people of all ages and abilities to ride bicycles
to their destinations instead of driving. Bike Month
2008’s theme is
Wheel Experience”. Have a Wheel Experience this May and leave
your car at home: arrive by bike! You will also be experiencing a
healthy lifestyle and helping everyone in San Luis Obispo County
experience cleaner air and reduced traffic. See all the fun people
have been Experiencing so far this May!

What's Your Wheel Experience Going To Be?

The 2008 Commuter Challenge was a great success!
65 Teams comprised
455 riders challenged themselves to log as many bicycle commute trips and miles as possible during the
Month of May. By the end of the month 18,102 bicycle commute trips had been taken -
and 62,400 miles by bike logged! Together these riders saved nearly 2,500 gallons of gas and $10,000!

  • With nearly 50 events throughout the month there is something for all ages and skill levels. Join in on Family Fun Community Happenings in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Santa Margarita and Pismo Beach, the BIKExperience Art Show, bike to school days around the County, or enjoy one of several bike tours throughout the County.

  • Bike to School & Work Week is May 19th - 23rd. Stop by participating local coffee houses with your helmet in hand to pick up a free coffee or tea and Bike Month Button.

  • BIKExperience Art Show -- this year at 1060 Osos Street in San Luis Obispo 

  • Make the Grade Ride-riders including some well known politicians riding over the Cuesta Grade, on Wednesday May 21st meets at 6:30 am at the Santa Margarita Park n' Ride.

  • Bike Valet at events all month long - featuring FREE quick checks by your local bike shop mechanics.

  • Bike Breakfast hosted by Commuter Challenge Teams - meet your fellow cyclists and have breakfast!
    May 1: Hosted by Spinnin & Grinnin and Ride of Way on the Bike Blvd.
    May 7: Hosted by CygNet Chain Gang, Cranks & CycleNauts at 994 Mill St.
    May 23: Hosted by Bike Kitchen on the Bike Blvd
    May 29: Hosted by Restoration Rollers & Bicycle Airs on the Bike Blvd.

  • Get on your bike and join in on rides out to Pozo, around Pismo Beach, or visiting Restoration Sites, Agricultural areas, or wineries. Enjoy a moonlight ride. Learn to ride a unicycle. Learn how to ride safer and with greater confidence by attending a Bike Ed session.

  • And join us at BIKE FEST on May 29th at the SLO Farmer's Market! There will be many interactive booths, great prizes, presentation of the Livable Community Award by the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition, and announcement of the winners of the Commuter Bike Challenge!

  • Bike Your BusinessShow your support of Bike Month by decorating your window or lobby with the "Wheel Experience" theme. The business with the best bike display will receive $1000 worth of scheduled media on KSBY, listing in full page color New Times Advertisement, and recognition at Bike Fest!
