In celebration of the AMGEN Tour of California, Downtown SLO will host a Downtown Block Party with the City of San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, May 16 from 2 PM until 6 PM on Higuera Street between Osos and Nipomo Streets. This event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public!
For the first time in ten years, this prestigious bike race, which brings over one hundred riders from across the globe, will race through the streets of Downtown San Luis Obispo. The Block Party will allow the public to watch the AMGEN Tour of California on five large screen televisions as riders race from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay. DJ Malik will open the event and begin spinning at 2 PM. At 4 PM Zongo All-Stars will take the stage to provide live music until 6 PM. Hosts Adam Montiel of Coast 104.5 and Krush 92.5 and local cycling enthusiast Peter Brown will emcee the event for the duration of the Block Party. Riders are expected to cruise through Downtown quickly, between 2:45 PM and 3:15 PM.
During the event, Higuera will be transformed into a public space filled with family-friendly activities, including a children’s Red Light, Green Light bike race, a competitive corn hole tournament, a beer garden, and a seating area to enjoy take-out from any of the various Downtown restaurants. BarrelHouse Brewing Company and JeanMarie Cidery will be available for purchase in the beer garden.
Street closures will be in effect from 11 AM until approximately 8 PM and will be similar to our weekly closure for the Farmers’ Market, effecting Higuera Street between Nipomo and Osos. The public is encouraged to visit Downtown SLO’s Facebook page to share and RSVP to the event.
